How We Research, Test & Verify

Our editorial process is built around one rule: every factual claim must be verified against a primary source, not a competitor's blog post or a brand's marketing copy.

Step 1
Primary Source Research
We go to original sources โ€” not competitors' comparison pages or aggregator sites. For BBB records, we check BBB.org directly. For warranty terms, we read the published warranty document. For founding year claims, we cross-reference multiple independent sources.
  • BBB data pulled from BBB.org โ€” not competitor blogs
  • Warranty fine print sourced from official brand pages
  • Company history cross-referenced via Crunchbase, LinkedIn, Yelp
Step 2
Hands-On Evaluation
Where possible, we test machines in real home conditions โ€” not in controlled lab settings that don't reflect what buyers will actually experience. We note source water type, pH, and hardness in our evaluations because these variables dramatically affect output.
  • Hโ‚‚ output tested with molecular hydrogen meters
  • ORP measured with calibrated redox meters
  • pH range verified across multiple water settings
  • Filter performance evaluated over time, not just on day one
Step 3
Claim Verification & Flagging
We distinguish between independently verified data and brand-published claims. When a manufacturer publishes their own performance figures without citing an independent lab, we flag it clearly โ€” and tell readers to verify in-home before committing.
  • Brand-published stats labeled as such
  • Independently tested figures cited with source
  • Missing data (e.g., no published ORP) flagged, not ignored
Step 4
Ongoing Monitoring & Updates
Brand data changes โ€” companies get acquired, warranties change, BBB records shift. We actively monitor and update content when facts change. Every article includes a last-updated date, and we note when a data point is disputed or recently changed.
  • BBB status monitored โ€” e.g., Enagic obtained accreditation Dec 2025
  • Warranty changes tracked and reflected in reviews
  • Name history and corporate structure documented

Ranking Formula

How We Rank

We rank brands, not individual models. Each brand receives a score from 0โ€“100 on seven weighted factors. Factor scores are based on verified data from our brand profiles โ€” BBB records, warranty documents, published specs, and hands-on testing where available. The weighted total determines brand order.

22%
Hโ‚‚ Output & Performance

Verified molecular hydrogen (PPM), ORP capability, plate count, and power system. Independently tested figures score higher than brand-published claims.

15%
Filtration Quality

Stage count, contaminant removal scope (heavy metals, VOCs, pharmaceuticals), and whether filtration is included on flagship models.

20%
Warranty & Ownership Cost

Parts and labor coverage duration, fine print (shipping on claims, restocking fees), and consistency across the lineup.

10%
Trial Period & Returns

Length of in-home trial, return policy clarity, and restocking or return-shipping costs.

15%
BBB & Consumer Trust

BBB letter grade, complaint count, accreditation tenure, and whether records were verified directly on BBB.org.

8%
Value for Money

Entry and flagship pricing relative to plate count, verified performance, and warranty depth. MLM markup reduces this score.

10%
Corporate Stability & Sales Model

Years in business, corporate name history, litigation or bankruptcy, and sales model (direct vs. MLM vs. retailer).

Factor weights total 100%. Scores are rounded to one decimal place.
